Saarland's best-known website
With up to 2 million users, www.sol.de is one of Saarland’s best-known websites. SOL.DE went online on 4 October 1999, when it was still called “Saarland Online”.
Since its relaunch in July 2021, it has been hosted by the Saarland-based managed WordPress hosting provider HostPress GmbH in Saarland. These days, platforms of this size are usually hosted by specialized providers abroad, such as Amazon AWS or Google Cloud. For the creators behind SOL.DE, the N49 agency from Saarbrücken, it was important to have a reliable, regional contact for hosting. True to the state motto “Great things are always created on a small scale”, the preferred partner is from Saarland, which specializes in hosting the “WordPress” website system used.

IT specialists in the Saarland
This is why Christian Lauer, Managing Director of N49, decided in favour of the Eppelborn-based company HostPress after a selection process. The team around Managing Director Marcus Krämer has specialised in the provision of server technologies for WordPress websites since 2015, making it one of the leading providers in Germany. The special thing about their offer is that the Saarland idea is also lived in the background: The complete server hardware is maintained by the Eppelborn IT system house Krämer IT Solutions GmbH in the VSEnet Group’s data centre in Saarwellingen. This modern data centre is “High Availability Level 3” certified by TÜV/tekit and ISO 27001 certified, making it one of the most secure data centres in the region.
Joint tour
100% green electricity for maximum performance
In a joint tour at the beginning of October 2021, all participants were given a look behind the scenes of this data centre, which is powered by 100% green electricity. “This aspect was also crucial for us: the power consumption of internet services is not negligible. That’s why it was important to us that the operation is CO2-neutral,” says Christian Lauer. It was great for all the companies involved to see that the principle “Great things are always created on a small scale” was really put into practice in this joint project, with four Saarland companies ensuring that visitors to SOL.DE can always surf the website quickly and securely.
